Advancing Veteran Success in Higher Education

Delivering accelerated vocational education for veterans and transitioning service members requires a multifaceted outreach strategy, a report from the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University finds. The report, Advancing Veteran Success in Higher Education (20 pages, PDF), highlights case studies of how Del Mar College and Tarrant County College in Texas and Wake Technical Community College in North Carolina designed, developed, and delivered successful vocational programs, with support from the Walmart Foundation (which also funded the report) through the Vocational Acceleration for Veterans Grant Program administered by IVMF. Best practices drawn from the three colleges' programs include harnessing existing resources and infrastructure to maximize enrollment capacity and minimize time required to complete training; raising stakeholders' awareness of the unique needs of veterans in a learning environment; collecting data and feedback to tailor vocational training to local employers' needs; and developing a vision for adding training modules for skills in higher demand.
