Beyond the Check: A Roadmap for Engaging Individual Donors

Many donors to arts and cultural organizations seek meaningful engagement beyond the act of writing a check, a report from the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance finds. Based on a survey of arts and culture donors, interviews with high-net-worth individuals in the Philadelphia area, and a literature review, the report, Beyond the Check: a Roadmap for Engaging Individual Donors (48 pages, PDF), found that engagement is especially important to millennials and high-net-worth donors, who said their giving decisions are based on what is important to them or their family traditions; that they want to feel appreciated for who they are and for more than their financial gifts; and that they prioritize strong organizational leadership and financial management in selecting which nonprofits to support. Funded by the Wyncote Foundation, the report also found that the issues donors care about, their approaches to giving, and their engagement with nonprofits differ by age group, race, gender, and sexual orientation, and that donors to arts and cultural organizations tend to support a range of causes, with only 30 percent saying arts and culture is their top-priority issue area.
