Change Starts Here

Social justice organizations looking to become more collaborative and effective need to invest significant time and resources in individual and organizational change, a report from the Center for Community Change finds. The report, Change Starts Here: A Report on the Center for Community Change and Its Continuing Journey to Individual and Organizational Transformation (40 pages, PDF), highlights lessons learned from CCC's ongoing initiative, launched in 2006, to invest in personal leadership development and innovation. Best practices include setting aside time and space at off-site retreats and in coaching sessions, cultivating leadership buy-in and support, welcoming challenges from skeptics, creating opportunities for experimentation, allowing for change to occur at varying paces and levels, and integrating culture change with organizational strategy and day-to-day management. Supported in part by the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the report also identified areas for improvement, including the challenge of addressing gaps between leadership development training and actual opportunities, embedding culture change into already heavy workloads, and staff turnover.
