The more than $4.5 million the Kresge Foundation has provided in support of the Detroit-area arts community has had a clear impact on recipients, the local arts ecosystem, and civic leaders and infrastructure, an evaluation of the first eight years of the effort finds. Based on interviews with seventy award recipients, other artists, local and national grantmakers, and arts, civic, and community leaders, the report, Elevating the Artist: Assessing Impacts of The Kresge Foundation's Support for Individual Artists in Detroit on Lives, Careers and the Detroit Community / 2008-2016 (44 pages, PDF), found that 75 percent of individual artists who received the foundation's Eminent Artist, Artist Fellows, or Gilda awards used the funds for "critical life and art-making expenses" and that many felt the grants brought them recognition and validation. The report also recommends that the program integrate arts into a broader range of initiatives and look to boost the profile of Detroit artists nationally and internationally.
