Engaging Boards and Trustees in Strategic Learning: A Toolkit

Engaging Boards and Trustees in Strategic Learning: A Toolkit

A report from Grantmakers for Effective Organizations provides new resources designed to help CEOs, evaluation staff, and senior leaders of foundations engage board members in strategic, continuous learning. The report, Engaging Boards and Trustees in Strategic Learning: A Toolkit (86 pages, PDF), argues that board members need to understand the need and advocate for strategic learning; develop and use strategic learning questions to guide their decisions and actions; value different kinds, levels, and presentations of data; build in time for reflection and dialogue in pursuit of strategic learning during board meetings; understand the importance of, and be explicit about, integrating an equity focus into the organization's work; and understand the nature of systems change and complexity and how they relate to the organization's work. In addition to a self-assessment, a glossary of strategic learning terms, a primer on systems change, a guide to developing strategic learning questions, and discussions of what it means to integrate an equity focus, the toolkit includes case studies of two foundations that are engaging their board in strategic learning.
