Impact and Learning: The Pillars of Stronger Foundation Practice

Foundations must embrace "listening and learning" if they want to increase their impact and the degree to which their grantmaking, investments, and other assets and resources advance their mission, a report from the London-based Association of Charitable Foundations argues. Part of ACF's Stronger Foundations Initiative, the report, Impact and Learning: The Pillars of Stronger Foundation Practice (44 pages, PDF), outlines seven "pillars of practice" for foundations looking to maximize their impact: understand your mission and the impact it seeks to achieve; base your decisions on evidence, including meaningful feedback and lived experience; believe that every individual has a role to play in the pursuit of impact and enable a culture of learning within the organization; consider your entire "toolbox," including voice, data, people, knowledge, networks, brand, and facilities; proactively work to learn how your operations affect others and avoid doing harm; learn from failure; and think collaboratively.
