Opportunity for Growth

Opportunity for Growth

Eliminating barriers to opportunity and making metro-area economies more inclusive can boost economic growth, a report from the Brookings Institution finds. The report, Opportunity for Growth: How Reducing Barriers to Economic Inclusion Can Benefit Workers, Firms, and Local Economies (45 pages, PDF), found that the more inclusive a regional economy, the more likely it is to maximize the talent base and entrepreneurship in a region, resulting in better economic growth and productivity. In turn, better economic growth, especially in cutting-edge industries, leads to wage gains and more opportunities for workers to move up the wage scale, as well as increased tax revenues. The report argues that employers and economic development organizations can play a role in supporting inclusive growth by working with community development, workforce development, and social justice organizations to remove barriers to inclusion; expanding access to entrepreneurship, education and skills training; and providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities that allow them to realize their full potential.
