'Outsized Impact'

Small foundations with few or no staff, giving circles, donor-advised funds, and individuals comprise the largest share of philanthropic giving, and their influence is on the rise, a new report from Exponent Philanthropy argues. The report, Outsized Impact (30 pages, PDF), notes that in the new giving economy, knowledge, intention, and passion are powerful currencies, while technical assistance, capacity building, convening, and advocacy are just as powerful as the checkbook. Small foundations and individual donors can boost their impact, the report suggests, by being more intentional in their funding decisions and responsive to evolving needs; forging cross-sector partnerships aimed at developing collective solutions to urgent problems; supporting advocacy efforts; engaging youth leaders and social entrepreneurs in their change efforts; and allocating more of their resources to impact investments.
