Returning Results: Planning and Evaluation at the Pew Charitable Trusts

Unlike their for-profit counterparts, foundations rarely operate in a marketplace that tells them how well they are doing. As a result, a growing number of foundations are using evaluation as a tool to strengthen understanding of their grantees' work. With an eye to sharing ideas about the crucial work of determining and evaluating philanthropic investments, the Planning and Evaluation group at the Pew Charitable Trusts has posted a PDF version of Returning Results: Planning and Evaluation to the Pew Charitable Trusts (38 pages) at the Pew Web site. Offered as a stimulus to wider discussion, the booklet also serves as a guide to and a window on grantmaking processes at one of the larger and more influential foundations in the country.
