Where We Go From Here: State Legislative Views on Higher Education in the New Millenium

After three consecutive years in which state policy makers were able to increase funds for higher education, legislators suddenly are faced with an economic slowdown and revenue shortfalls that could force them to cut budgets for the first time in nearly a decade. What this might mean for higher education at the state level is the subject of Where We Go From Here: State Legislative Views on Higher Education in the New Millenium (56 pages, PDF), a new report from the National Educational Association. Based on in-depth telephone interviews conducted with house and senate education leaders from all fifty states, the report describes general patterns and trends drawn from respondents' responses in three broad areas — what states need from higher education, state legislative agendas for higher education, and state funding for higher education — and offers a handful of observations and three possible scenarios based on those responses.
