Job Summary

Job Title: West Coast Senior Major Gifts Officer

Department: Development

The Center seeks an entrepreneurial Senior Major Gifts Officer who will report to the Senior Director of Major Gifts. The Center is in a period of tremendous growth as aligned with our strategic plan and a surge of donor engagement post-Election. The Center is also creating a series of fundraising campaigns focused on its US Litigation growth among other initiatives in support of the above activities. Given this, the Center is adding to the Major Gifts team including supplementing existing staffing on the West Coast. This is a new position to develop and manage a major donor program based in the Bay Area with satellite donor efforts throughout California and in Seattle. The new Senior Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for development activities in key locations and will build a broader base of major donors throughout these geographic regions. The Senior Major Gift Officer will bring their network and key relationships with particular emphasis around those who are highly motivated post-Election and are active in other social justice and/or political movements.

This position will be based in the Bay Area; other locations in California may be considered. 

This position will work remotely (home office scenario).

Responsibilities

The primary job responsibilities of the Senior Major Gifts Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, manage and expand a portfolio of prospects capable of making gifts $5,000-$500,000.  Emphasis will be on securing a significant number of new gifts and gift upgrades through a strategic and aggressive approach to personal cultivation and solicitation;
  • Oversee, design and manage donor events (including salons, dinners & special events) for the President of the Center, key Executive Team members as well as other senior staff and members of the litigation team;
  • Collaborate with the Individual Giving team to create strategies to expand the donor pipeline and upgrade mid-level donors, achieving aggressive targets for an increase in number of donors and overall donor engagement in California and the Pacific Northwest;
  • Identify and cultivate Board and Leadership Council Prospects;
  • Create briefings, proposal materials, and other communications for major donors;
  • Work with donor volunteers and the Manager of Special Events and Development Operations on events and special initiatives in the region;
  • Build relationships with the Center's program staff including communications to acquire the information needed to solicit gifts and build donor relationships effectively;
  • Work as part of the overall development team to develop and execute strategies to achieve annual departmental goals; and,
  • Collaborate with the development team in goal setting and expense management.

Qualifications

  • 7-10 years' experience working in a strategic, front-line annual and/or major gifts fundraising position;
  • A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high net-worth individuals in a very fast-paced, mission-driven environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to create a vibrant major gifts program;
  • Ability to effectively communicate the mission, goals, and needs of an organization to donors, increasing donor loyalty and engagement;
  • Principled, ethical, professional and committed to exceptional work quality and standards;
  • Highly organized, creative, pro-active, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize with superior time management and troubleshooting skills;
  • Ability to meet short deadlines and thrive within a very fast-paced, professionally rigorous environment;
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills and demonstrated ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, accurately and concisely;
  • Experience with volunteer management;
  • A Bachelor's degree is required;
  • Comfort and experience in a work from home environment;
  • Ability to travel, frequently, required, including the ability to travel throughout CA /Pac NW for meetings and events, as needed;
  • Experience specifically in reproductive rights a plus or familiarity with other issues relating to women's equality, human rights, civil rights, or racial and social justice issues is highly desirable; and,
  • Commitment to the Center's mission, purpose, and values.
