History and Current Context

Founded in 1919 to support Jewish immigrant boys, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown to serve more than 300 boys and girls, Jewish and non-Jewish, annually, from more than 90 towns across Massachusetts, as well as almost 200 adults in the Friend 2 Friend program, which matches volunteers with adults who have mild to moderate disabilities. A leader in the mentoring movement locally, nationally, and internationally, we were a founding member of the national Big Brothers Big Sisters movement and are among 400 independent BBBS program in the US. In addition, JBBBS has supported mentoring relationships in Haifa, Israel and Dnepropetovsk, Ukraine through our sister-city initiatives. Throughout the growth and evolution of the organization, our commitment to the values of family and community sustain us.

Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters is at a critical moment in our history, as our CEO steps down after more than 20 years of dedicated service. Building on a strong base of community and donor support and outstanding programmatic results, we seek a new Chief Executive Officer to collaborate with the Board of Directors and agency leadership to create a vision and strategy for the future, ensure the resources necessary to implement that vision, and build and inspire the dedicated staff in working together to achieve common goals.  

Job Summary

The Chief Executive Officer position is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic leader and experienced organizational manager to lead JBBBS into its next phase of growth and impact. With primary responsibility for overall organizational leadership and management, the CEO will play a key role in developing the organizational strategy and vision, working in close partnership with the Board, staff, and community stakeholders. In order to execute towards that strategy on a daily basis, the CEO will focus on external relations, fundraising, and internal management and leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and internal management for the entire organization, ensuring that JBBBS continues to deliver strong program results, has the funding to support and grow the program, and remains a key player within external networks
  • Play a leadership role, with the Board and management, in developing a strategic plan; translate strategy and vision into annual work plans and support the team in meeting organizational goals
  • Serve as a key partner to the VP, Strategy and Development in setting ambitious fundraising goals, thinking creatively about opening up new funding streams, and ensuring adequate funding to support effective programs
  • Participate actively as a key fundraiser, building and cultivating key funder relationships
  • Oversee all financial and operational functions of the organization, in collaboration with the internal team as well as outsourced vendors for HR and financial management
  • Building on the current team, create a high-performing organizational culture and appropriate structure where team members feel supported, challenged, and respected while being focused on organizational goals and values; maintain a climate that attracts and motivates a talented and diverse staff and ensure that effective human capital management practices are in place
  • Serve as a primary spokesperson for JBBBS in the community, building on existing relationships with community members, agencies, funders, volunteers, and others to ensure strong brand recognition
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities for partnership in alignment with organizational strategies
  • Serve as JBBBS representative to the national Big Brothers Big Sisters network, continuing JBBBS’ role as a key contributor to the movement
  • Report to and work with the Board and sub-committees to ensure effective management and visionary leadership of the agency
  • Use financial management experience to ensure that appropriate systems and checks and balances are in place, and manage the budgeting, forecasting and reporting processes internally
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors, EVP, and VP of Strategy and Development to strengthen, engage, and grow the Board 

Qualifications

  • Proven success in an externally-facing leadership role, preferably within a nonprofit organization
  • Experience managing change and leading through growth and transition, preferably within a small organization with significant external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or commitment to mentoring, with personal experience as a mentor or professional experience in a mentoring organization preferred
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience, with a successful track record of building authentic relationships with a diverse range of supporters
  • Experience managing departmental and/or organizational budgets and finances with integrity and transparency
  • Demonstrated experience leading staff teams with a high degree of interpersonal and cultural competence and trust
  • Experience partnering effectively with a Board of Directors to ensure strong organizational governance, leadership, and strategy
  • Proven ability to lead thoughtfully and intentionally, gathering input, acting on feedback, making appropriate decisions, and demonstrating maturity and sound professional judgment
  • Demonstrated success building authentic relationships, drawing on a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to develop and sustain relational trust
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating in a compelling, inspirational manner and displaying a commitment to openness, transparency, and listening deeply to others
  • Effective and collaborative leadership style
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
