Job Summary

Position Summary:  Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads and oversees all fundraising efforts of the agency.

In managing the development efforts, the CDO creates and implements strategies for annual and major gift fundraising and provides professional structure and strategic thought for long-term fund development.

The CDO provides leadership and thorough implementation of the accreditation as well as the performance and quality improvement processes within the sphere of leadership. The CDO is also a member of the Executive Team.

Overall Leadership:

  • Commitment to Mission and Organizational Sustainability: Model commitment to the Catholic Charities of the East Bay (CCEB) mission and planning for sustainable organizational future of service, including via work with the executive team and representation of the agency.

Strategic Management:                                                                                        

  • As a member of the executive team, participates in the annual budgeting and long-term strategic plan implementation.
  • Provide leadership in organization development and change management.
  • Evaluates program and agency metrics to ensure contribution to organizational effectiveness.

Essential Responsibilities:                                                                

Goals and Plans

  • Draft annual fundraising projections based on historical performance, current capabilities, and future economic trends. Develop written plan, goals, and strategies for achieving projected annual operating funds. Provide monthly analysis of progress toward annual fundraising goals.  
  • Implement the Benevon fundraising model to ensure consistency of the fundraising practice at CCEB.
  • Manage implementation of work plan for annual fundraising campaign.
  • Provide training to staff, board of directors, and volunteers regarding best practices in development in support of the agency’s needs.
  • Research and brings forward strategies to diversify funding.
  • Implement policies and procedures in line with accreditation standards.  Implement performance and quality improvement process in compliance with agency’s process.  Ensure that all employees in department or program understand these and work accordingly.

Staff Supervision

  • Manage the work of the Raisers Edge database, transforming lives tours and annual lunch, parish outreach, and major gifts and planned giving staff and ensure timely and professional completion of duties.
  • Evaluate ongoing and annual performance of direct reports and hold them accountable for managing and evaluating performance of their respective staffs.
  • Ensure that employee training meets accreditation standards.

Donors

  • Create and maintain relationships with donors in the $10,000 to $1,000,000 gift range, including identification, strategy development, cultivation, solicitation, data tracking, and stewardship.
  • Manage appeal strategies and follow-up.
  • Oversee the gift acknowledgment, tracking, stewardship and cultivation processes for all donors. Direct the management and maintenance of all database and recordkeeping functions for the department; ensure donors’ restrictions and preferences are accurately documented and communicated to fiscal department. Oversee pledge entry, billing, and reporting process.  Lead collection follow-up on past due pledges.
  • Assist in implementation of endowment, planned giving, and capital campaigns as directed.

Events

  • Oversee successful planning and execution of the annual fundraising campaigns following established best practices, including the parish and holiday appeals, tours, free feel-good events, and the annual ask event. This includes the annual Golf Tournament and the Transforming Lives Annual Lunch with an eventual annual goal of $1,000,000 for the lunch.
  • Oversee recruitment of staff and volunteers to serve as table hosts, agency ambassadors, and fundraisers.

Board and staff participation

  • Collaborate with board members, board committees, and staff on locating and cultivating funding opportunities.
  • Help recruit board members for involvement in fundraising and fund support; help train board members on effective fundraising practices.
  • Provide leadership on the Engagement Committee which meets monthly.

Spokesperson

  • Serve as an articulate and appropriate spokesperson and advocate for CCEB’s mission and program in the funding community and elsewhere.
  • Participate and attend community events to establish strategic relationships for potential funding.

    • Cultivation activities with top 100 donors with the goal of meeting with each major donor twice per year

    • Progress on goals by size of gifts. For example, number of asks made to gifts received by gift breakdown:
      • $100,000 and over

  • Improved professional relationships with grantors.
  • Timely and effective communication and marketing of CCEB fundraising events and other agency press releases/media relations.
  • Professional development of department staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Excellent organizational skills needed.  Must be able to prioritize responsibilities properly and handle multiple tasks relating to concurrent grant and development projects.
  • Minimum of fifteen years of direct experience in all phases of fund development.
  • College degree required, Master’s preferred; coursework in writing, management, and social service disciplines preferred.
  • Mastery of Raiser’s Edge or a similar relational database as well as Word, Excel, and general computer and interest skills required.
  • Ability to develop budgets and program in Excel.
  • Ability to be an effective trainer and to communicate with a variety of personalities of great diversity. Must be able to work independently, multi-task continually and lead by example.
  • Cooperative, friendly, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers.  Ability to work closely with other employees to ensure positive, constructive environment within the program or department, and throughout the agency.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and public relations skills; excellent organizational development and analytical skills a must with the ability to develop and implement strategic development plans; the energy and drive to lead the achievement of ambitious fundraising efforts.
