The New 42nd Street is an independent non-profit organization established in the mid-1990s by New York City and state officials to revitalize seven historic theaters on West 42nd Street as part of the Times Square redevelopment plan. The New 42nd Street’s New Victory Theater is New York City’s only professional live theater whose productions are specifically intended for children and their families.
The New 42nd Street has long-term landlord responsibility for its leased properties on 42nd Street, and it built, operates, and has its administrative offices in The New 42nd Street Studios, a 10-story rehearsal studio and office building mid-block on 42nd Street, west of Times Square. The New Victory Theater—renovated and operated by The New 42nd Street—is, however, The New 42nd Street’s primary development focus. The mission of the New Victory Theater is to expose young people, their families, and teachers to the arts through live performances in order to create a unique learning experience and enhance their educational development. This is done through thoughtful, intelligent, inspiring and artistically rich presentations. Many students experience their first ever, live performance in The New Victory Theater. The Theater also has a nationally-recognized arts education program in over 160 New York City public schools, and career development programs for high-school and college students.
The New 42nd Street has an organizational budget of $17 million, $11 million of which is dedicated to the New Victory Theater. The theater's budget is supported by a variety of income streams, including specific fundraising activities which bring in approximately $3.5 million.
The New 42nd Street is seeking an outstanding individual to become its new Vice President of Development (“VP”). Reporting directly to the President, the VP will be responsible for meeting and annually growing the New Victory Theater’s $3.5 million contributed income goal under the framework of a recently completed strategic plan, and facilitating the Theater’s development, by deepening all philanthropic relationships for The New 42nd Street. The VP must be a confident and strategic leader who will oversee and mature an efficient and effective development department and activate and expand a nascent major gifts program. The VP will also focus on increasing the visibility and understanding of the work and mission of The New 42nd Street.
Under the President’s guidance, the VP will personally raise major gifts from individuals and lead a department that generates support across public and private sectors, including national foundations, corporate sponsors, government sources, and individual contributors. The VP will direct all fundraising and development activities, including the creation and execution of development plans, budgeting, and reporting of fundraising systems and procedures with a staff of five and a part-time fellow. He or she will work closely with the President to cultivate and secure major gifts and grants while also collaborating with the Board of Directors and its committees to further the institution’s goals.
The New 42nd Street is seeking an individual with extraordinary leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the executive team. The VP must demonstrate a bold and innovative approach to fundraising and be a quick study of the organization’s past successes and future opportunities. He or she must possess exceptional communication skills, demonstrate interpersonal judgment, and have the desire to be a part of an extraordinary team.
- Serve as a member of the Executive Team, collaborating with and supporting the Board of Directors, President, and staff to strategize on organizational and fundraising goals
- Increase the visibility and understanding of the work and mission of the Theater
- Direct all fundraising and development activities including: special events, foundation and corporate asks, individual giving, and grant writing
- Meet and increase the Theater’s annual fundraising goals from government, corporations, foundations, and individuals
- Oversee and participate in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current and new funders
- Represent The New 42nd Street with prospective and current donors and in other public settings, advancing the organization’s mission and visibility
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the development field in positions with increasing management responsibility
- Knowledge of the cultural arena and performing arts
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience managing and leading a professional and dedicated development team
- Solid track record of fundraising among major donors, foundations, corporations, and sponsors
- Bright and diplomatic attitude while working with the highest level of personal integrity
- Sound judgement and a sense of humor is a must
