George Washington's Mount Vernon is looking for a dynamic, experienced senior development professional to lead Mount Vernon's leadership annual, major, and principal gift team. This position will also be responsible for its own portfolio and be expected to cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts from principal and major gift donors and prospects. The ideal candidate will have experience and success raising gifts at the $100,000+ level as well as experience managing high-performing fundraising teams covering both individual and institutional giving. The position reports to Joe Bondi, Senior Vice President for Development.

George Washington's Mount Vernon (Mount Vernon), the home and estate of America's first President, is the Nation's most visited historic home. Located on the banks of the Potomac River, roughly 15 miles south of Washington, D.C., and eight miles south of Alexandria, Virginia, Mount Vernon's mission is to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations.

In addition to providing a world-class visitor experience, Mount Vernon is a leader in generating new scholarship about the founding era. In 2013, Mount Vernon opened the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington.

Mount Vernon is owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association (MVLA), a private 501(c)3, founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham. In its earliest days, the MVLA canvassed the country to raise money to rescue the estate as it was falling into ruin. Today, they are widely credited with creating the historic preservation movement in the United States.

Job Summary

The ideal candidate will have experience and success raising gifts at the $100,000+ level as well as experience managing high-performing fundraising teams covering both individual and institutional giving. Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of four, consisting of three major gift officers and a senior manager of donor stewardship and development events.
  • Establish and implement a portfolio and moves management system that holds gift officers accountable for their work and draws on the best practices of the profession to track productivity.
  • Move a portfolio of a minimum of 75 donors and prospects through face-to-face visits to identify, cultivate, solicit, close and steward gifts of $100,000 and higher. This prospect work may include domestic travel.
  • Manage the major and principal gift pipeline of expected closures and annual goals.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough and accurate understanding of Mount Vernon's programs and funding priorities to effectively connect prospects and supporters to funding needs.
  • Serve as Development team point person for the department of Historic Preservation & Collections and the liaison for their volunteer donor group known as the Connoisseur Society.
  • Attend events outside of normal business hours and work closely with fellow Mount Vernon staff in hosting prospects and supporters visiting the Estate.

Qualifications

Accomplishments:

  • A minimum of ten years of development experience in increasingly senior roles, including a proven track record of fundraising at the $100k+ level and management of highly-functioning development teams.
  • Track record of closing and soliciting 6- and 7-figure gifts from individuals.
  • Experience at a historic site, museum or other related nonprofit organization preferred but not required.
  • Experience designing and implementing best practice metric and accountability systems.
  • Demonstrated success working with Board members and a strong leadership team.
  • Dedication to practicing creative and reliable stewardship.
  • Experience with campaign and endowment is preferred.
  • Successful experience working collaboratively with leadership volunteers, senior staff and development colleagues and commitment to drive activity that achieves or exceeds individual and team goals.

  • Driven by a sense of urgency to inspire donors and prospects to support the mission of Mount Vernon.
  • Ability to travel.
