Food Bank’s External Relations department is responsible for developing and managing the organization’s relationships with the general public as well as individual and institutional donors.  Success in this department involves assisting key donors and partners in the deepening of their leadership and giving with the organization relied on by the most vulnerable citizens of New York City. From celebrities to individuals, Food Bank’s partners assist the organization in its mission to serve 1 out of every 5 New Yorkers.

Job Summary

Food Bank For New York City has an opportunity for a Director of Institutional Giving. This person is responsible for leading and managing strategic relationships with institutional funders – government agencies, private and corporate foundations – to advance the Food Bank’s strategic plan and organizational priorities. To be successful in this role, you will feel at home working in an environment that requires you to juggle multiple priorities and competing deadlines.  You will also need to be adept at translating organizational goals into tangible projects and targets, setting direction for a team.  The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to the mission of the Food Bank and possess exceptional communications skills, a track record in partner engagement, excellent people and project management skills, and the ability to manage complex internal and external relationships. The Director of Institutional Giving will report to the Vice President for Fundraising.

Responsibilities

THE POSITION AND ITS KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Lead a three-person team in the development and implementation of outreach, cultivation, and stewardship strategies for a portfolio of 150+ private foundations, corporate foundations, and government funding relationships.
  • Develop and implement strategic steps for maximizing new opportunities for Food Bank For New York City. Actively prospect and identify new government and private funders to realize Food Bank’s organizational priorities outlined in its strategic plan and as part of 35th Anniversary campaign.
  • Lead the engagement of senior staff and volunteer leadership in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of institutional funders.
  • Manage regular, cross departmental meetings to develop strategic proposals that present sound program models and foster solid stakeholder buy-in.
  • Develop a detailed, annual plan of revenues and expenditures for the Institutional Giving team that advances overall fundraising goals and produce monthly progress reports that accurately reflect team activity and performance.

Partner Engagement and Management

  • Directly cultivate, steward and manage a portfolio of 50+ relationships with the capacity to make six- and seven-figure commitments.
  • Lead and assist with the development of tailored proposals for corporate, foundation and government partners that align to Food Bank’s strategic priorities and provide appropriate levels of recognition to funders.
  • Foster collaboration across functional areas (Institutional Giving, Engagement and Events, Major Gifts, Executive Office, Programs) to further the development of robust and multi-faceted relationships with corporate partners that garner financial, in-kind, and volunteer support.
  • Steward relationships by working closely with Food Bank’s Funding and Impact Administrator to finalize contracts and monitor grant implementation, sharing relevant updates with senior staff, and cultivating support with the goal of renewing or expanding relationships.
  • Develop and implement systems to ensure that all reports for foundation and corporate funders are drafted and submitted in a timely fashion. Maintain close coordination and collaboration with programs and finance teams on all reporting to foundation, corporate and public funders.

Talent Management

  • Proven and demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, and coach two full-time development professionals to create and implement effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for donors and prospects to effectively drive results in both their individual and team portfolio.
  • Empower the team to realize their professional development goals through consistent and thoughtful coaching, feedback, and mentoring.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES DESIRED:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in Institutional Giving with demonstrated results in terms of new and upgraded partnerships/grants;
  • B.A. or B.S. Degree preferred;
  • Demonstrated portfolio management skills with the proven ability to develop and grow high-yield relationships;
  • Familiarity with the NYC giving community and demonstrated success therein is a must.
  • Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, enthusiasm and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort.

  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce);
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure, with a history of success in roles requiring creative and critical thinking while managing multiple priorities in a highly dynamic environment;
  • Experience with or knowledge of social service/hunger issues a plus; and
