Food Bank For New York City’s income support services, including food stamps (also known as SNAP) and free tax assistance for the working poor, put more than $110 million each year into the pockets of New Yorkers, helping them to afford food and achieve greater dignity and independence. Food Bank’s nutrition education programs and services empower more than 50,000 children, teens and adults to sustain a healthy diet and active lifestyle on a limited budget. Working toward long-term solutions to food poverty, Food Bank develops policy and conducts research to inform community and government efforts.

Job Summary

Food Bank’s External Relations department is responsible for developing and managing the organization’s relationships with the general public as well as individual and institutional donors. Success in this department involves assisting key donors and partners in the deepening of their leadership and giving with the organization relied on by the most vulnerable citizens of New York City. From celebrities to individuals, Food Bank’s partners assist the organization in its mission to serve 1 out of every 5 New Yorkers.

Food Bank’s Senior Manager of Individual Giving will work with a collegial team to secure funds for the organization by managing a group of assigned, qualified mid- level ($1,000-$4,999) and major donors ($5,000+), assuring that as many as possible are retained as continuing donors, and upgraded in their giving and involvement. The Senior Manager will also work across the organization to identify, cultivate and purse new donor prospects from within Food Bank’s existing donor base and among New York City’s broader philanthropic community.

Under the leadership of the Director of Individual and Major Giving, and a key member of a four-person Individual Giving team, the Senior Manager of Individual Giving will:

  • Collaborate with senior leadership and colleagues across the organization to influence and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan which increases revenue to support Food Bank’s strategic direction and mission to end hunger in New York City;
  • Maintain a portfolio of 100-150 donors and prospects by developing and implementing strategies for establishing and strengthening these relationships;
  • Solicit and close gifts with a focus on upgrading current mid-level donors who have the capacity to make annual gifts of $5,000+;
  • Work with Program, Institutional Giving and Marketing/Communications teams to get project information and budgets to create customized proposals, concise talking points and asks that will engage prospects and secure gifts;
  • Work in close partnership with Institutional Giving, Corporate Partnerships, Volunteer Engagement and Events teams to refer or share relationships by offering multiple channels for engagement;
  • Ensure senior staff are supported in their donor relations work, providing reminders, materials, and draft communications, as well as assisting with briefings, appointment scheduling and call reports;
  • Help produce cultivation and stewardship events for prospects and donors at the mid- and major levels;
  • Demonstrated commitment to Food Bank’s core values

  • Strong commitment to social justice/hunger issues;
  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Minimum of five years donor relations experience;
  • Very strong written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to present at public platforms;
  • Experience running fundraising and cultivation events for donors and prospects;
  • Ability to set priorities, manage projects and meet deadlines.
