At Yosemite Conservancy, we strive to inspire people to help protect one of the most beautiful places on Earth: Yosemite National Park. For nearly a century, our organization, the first national park cooperating association, has focused on providing for Yosemite’s future.  We could not succeed in that mission without the support of our generous donors. In recent years, our tens of thousands of supporters have helped us provide $119 million for high-priority projects in the park, including trail and habitat restoration, wildlife management, and scientific research.

Job Summary

The Development Director, based in the Conservancy’s San Francisco office, reports to the President and is responsible for the implementation and success of the organization’s fundraising initiatives. While leading a 10-person team, the Director oversees all aspects of the Conservancy’s development activities, including capital campaigns; major, planned and institutional giving; the annual fund; cause-related marketing opportunities; and a robust calendar of donor-stewardship and -cultivation events. The Director’s leadership and strategic oversight are crucial to fulfilling the Conservancy’s commitment to funding projects and programs that preserve Yosemite and enrich the visitor experience. 




  • Strategically sets and meets fundraising objectives; evaluates ongoing results and guides initiatives
  • Works with executive staff and Board members to establish fundraising goals; ensures goals are met
  • Works closely with the President and Board members with major gift fundraising; collaborates in the recruitment and orientation of new Board members
  • Maintains a major gift portfolio of all Board members
  • Collaborates closely with Marketing & Communications staff; provides information on development activities; instills an atmosphere of partnership in developing and utilizing core messaging for all donor and donor prospect communications 
  • Coordinates with park-based Program and Retail staff on donor recruitment, in-park fundraising and marketing efforts in Yosemite National Park
  • Manages capital campaigns
  • Oversees strategies to engage and solicit major gift prospects
  • Collaborates with Development Team to create annual budget and annual plan for fundraising

Staff Management:

  • Leads, inspires, and manages the Development Team to achieve relationship-building and funding objectives
  • Recruits, develops, and retains high-performing Development staff; facilitates effective team collaboration

Administrative Management:

  • Develops and manages department’s expense budget, revenue forecasts and reporting; ensures proper and accurate record keeping
  • Monitors Development section of the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan; ensures that annual plans are consistent with the Strategic Plan
  • Serves on the Conservancy’s Management Team; participates with National Park Service staff and Board members to achieve the Conservancy’s mission and goals


  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Yosemite Conservancy; knowledge of /and enthusiasm for National Parks, conservation and protected areas
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, English or related field
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of nonprofit fundraising experience including a capital campaign
  • Minimum of 2 years soliciting and stewarding major gifts ($50,000 and above) from individuals as a Major Gifts Officer, Development Director or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years in a managerial role with 4 or more direct reports
  • Proven track record of fundraising success meeting annual goals of $10 million plus preferred
  • Experience in creating, tracking and managing complex budgets
  • Ease with statistical analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence in consensus-building with proven ability to negotiate complex, high-profile or sensitive situations
  • Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns and major and planned gifts
  • Adept at working with Microsoft Office and using fundraising database/CRM software to search for information, update donor records, and create follow-up steps (Raiser’s Edge preferred)
  • Ability to work in high-visibility, fast-paced and stressful environment
  • Proven track record of managing work in a highly organized, detail-oriented manner, with the ability to keep accurate records, manage time and prioritize tasks effectively, run succinct meetings, and maintain an efficient schedule
  • Visionary, trustworthy, ethical, self-confident, diplomatic, understanding, personable, patient, energetic and innovative



  • Travel within the Bay Area, to Yosemite National Park and all parts of California, donor offices/homes and event/meeting sites
  • Weekend and evening responsibilities; ability to work long hours
  • Primarily works in San Francisco office at desk/computer, in meetings and on the phone
  • Occasionally may walk/hike on uneven ground, sometimes at high elevation, while on trails in Yosemite Park
  • Lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 40 pounds
