Position:  Every year Catholic Charities helps 400,000 New Yorkers providing $790 Million of services touching almost every human need.  Embarking on its first ever five-year $100 Million Centennial Campaign, Catholic Charities is building and growing. At present, development is accountable for about $14 million annually. In this high visibility role as the Major Gifts Officer, you will work across the leadership team (Development Director, Senior and Program Staff) as you develop strategies that will grow fundraising initiatives, solicit new donations, and cultivate existing relationships.

Job Summary

The Director of Leadership Gifts is a leading senior member of the Development Department with a focus on supporting the Department’s efforts to achieve the Centennial Campaign $100 million goal successfully.  The Director of Leadership Gifts is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors for gifts at $25,000+ range.  Reporting to the Director of Development and in conjunction with the efforts of the Sr. Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving and Cardinal’s Committee for Charity Major Gifts Officer, the Director of Leadership Gifts will help ensure the successful department’s efforts to meet annual fundraising goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Review existing campaign plans and strategies and recommend appropriate adjustments that address challenges and take advantage of opportunities
  2. Support the efforts of the Centennial Campaign Committee and Board members, to cultivate, and steward of current and identify new donors
  3. In collaboration with the Sr. Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving, identify, cultivate, new major donor prospects, both individual and corporations for gifts at the $25,000+ level
  4. Oversee the efforts of the Cardinal’s Committee for Charity Major Gifts officer and Program officer on the cultivation of new donors and current donors, with giving capacity at the $5,000+ level
  5. In association with Sr. Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving, follow-up on recommendations and requests for support made by the Board and Committee Members
  6. With the support of the Deputy Director of Development, prepare materials for the quarterly Centennial Committee meeting, including financial reports and other relevant KPI data that measures performance against campaign goals
  7. Additional responsibilities on an ad hoc or ongoing basis as assigned to successfully integrating the Centennial Campaign goals into Catholic Charities ongoing fundraising activities
  8. Other duties assigned


Education and experience required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least four years’ fundraising experience including proven success interacting and cultivating new major donors as well as securing major gifts from current donors
  • Proven ability to create a climate of confidence and trust on the part of donors
  • Ability to track the progress of each major account using Raisers Edge and other database programs
  • Established track record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing, and maintaining major gifts from individuals
  • Able to build strong professional relationships with donors and their advisors
  • Proven ability to work well with teams in complex situations and to manage multiple priorities simultaneously 

Skills, Licenses, and competencies required: 

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus
  • Superior communication skills
  • Well-honed interpersonal skills; ability to interact comfortably with individuals at all levels
  • High energy, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic
  • A team-oriented, collaborative style
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and follow-up skills
  • Able to participate in agency/community events, as necessary
  • A genuine interest in the Catholic Charities mission
