The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city's largest public arts institutions and comprise the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection of over 4,000 years of ancient and European art including Auguste Rodin's The Thinker and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in a Beaux-Arts style building overlooking Lincoln Park and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is seeking a Director of Planned Giving. This role oversees the implementation of a strategic comprehensive approach for planned giving which includes, but is not limited to, identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, recognizing and stewarding donors, and marketing planned giving opportunities.
Senior Director of Individual and Major Giving
- Collaborate with Director, Development Managers, Senior Management and Board of Trustees to grow the planned giving program which increases revenue to support the strategic direction of the Museums.
- Implement a strategic approach to planned giving including strategies for cultivating, soliciting, recognizing and stewarding donors.
- Possess knowledge of planned giving vehicles and basic estate and financial planning, including tax implications. Apply this knowledge to facilitate prompt and accurate solutions to individual donor needs and goals. Keep abreast of changes and emerging issues in Planned Giving.
- Conduct solicitations/stewardship meetings, respond to inquiries, and motivate prospective donors to commit to a legacy gift.
- Work with donors on various aspects of planned giving including charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of unusual or complicated assets.
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive tracking system for all planned gift donors and prospects and supervise its use in solicitation of gifts to closure.
- Design and conduct direct mail and advertising campaigns to target planned gifts.
- Plan and execute cultivation and donor recognition events, such as the Annual Legacy Tea.
- Develop, design and implement a planned giving marketing plan to grow the planned giving program. Maintain and update the planned giving website and printed collateral as needed.
- Develop guidelines and processes that address acceptance, management and disposition of planned gifts.
- Prepare regular reports on progress, budget, receipts, and expenditures related to the planned giving program and the management of fund development activities.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
WORK EXPERIENCE: Five to seven years of fundraising in planned giving solicitation. Proven fundraising results in a combination of these areas: major gift solicitation and planned giving.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Individual must be a highly motivated, well-organized professional with a progressive record of achievement and level of responsibility in fund raising.
- Must have proven record in prospecting, donor cultivation and gift solicitation experience resulting in successful gift solicitations.
- General knowledge of the law, with specific emphasis on charitable aspects of tax, estate planning and probate law.
- Ability to establish and maintain confidential communication with lawyers and financial advisors, verbally and in writing.
- High level of tact and diplomacy is required to work well with donors, trustees, volunteers, and staff at all levels.
- Understanding of ethical standards and fundraising principles.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve Museums' goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively and in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
- Ability to foster teamwork, work cooperatively with others to set goals, resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Ability to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, create and implement action plans, and evaluate the process and results.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must have knowledge of fundraising (preferably Salesforce) software.
- Knowledge of Bay Area audience and philanthropic community is desirable.
- Interest in art and art history preferred.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for events or deadlines.
