 We are seeking an experienced Development Manager to join our team! The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to social, racial, gender, economic and environmental justice.

Job Summary

The Development Manager will be responsible for developing, driving and evaluating the fundraising functions of the organization. The Development Manager is a clear and persuasive writer who can meaningfully lift up our mission to potential funders, ensuring that our values are at the forefront. A perceptive and careful listener, the Development Manager is adept at identifying big and small opportunities to strengthen connections between our supporters, our work, and our affiliates’ work. The ideal person in this role is an experienced manager of foundation funding relationships and is also excited by the opportunity to be involved with growing new development projects. In addition to grants management, the Development Manager will utilize donor relations, event coordination, writing, marketing, and other fund development skills, providing skilled data management, prospect research, and other key elements of development support.

Fundraising Planning

  • Development: manage the process of developing a fundraising plan, which includes foundation and union grants, as well as a strategy and system for new sources of revenue, like individual donor development.
  • Implementation: support the Leadership Team in implementing the plan’s strategies and goals.
  • Reporting: develop periodic reports on the progress of the plan.

Foundation and Union Grants

  • Prospecting: facilitate identifying, qualifying, and prioritizing funders.
  • Affiliates: with the Deputy Director, monitor capacity building opportunities for affiliates.
  • Relationship building: facilitate the development of relationships with funders through regular communications, including creating a calendar of touch-points.
  • Meeting Preparation: scheduling and preparing for meetings and presentations.
  • Writing grants: draft letters of intent and grant proposals, frame and edit proposals, and write interim and final reports. Coordinate the gathering of information (budgets, materials, evaluation reports, etc.) to support grant requests and reporting.
  • Monitor grants: develop, track, and meet grant submission and reporting deadlines. Track the fulfillment of grant deliverables with staff.
  • Monitor subgrants: manage the awards and reporting to-dos for affiliate’s subgrants.

Individual Donors 

  • Online giving: Monitor and maintain online giving.
  • Relationship building: manage donor cultivation, including sending personal notes and setting up phone calls.
  • Fundraising appeals: with the Communications Director, plan out periodic appeals and draft the letters.
  • Database: Manage the donor database and facilitate increasing the number of potential donors. 

Communications and Marketing 

  • In partnership with the Communications Director, manage, write, and coordinate communications and marketing efforts designed for fundraising.
  • Work with program staff to get regular program reports. 
  • Disseminate communications to funders and donors, including press clips.

Systems and Infrastructure 

  • Systems development: maintain and enhance fundamental systems required to run a best practices fundraising program.
  • Calendar: Create and maintain annual fundraising calendar of activities, including following up with staff on their to-dos.
  • Fundraising Database: Maintain funder, donor, foundation, and grants records.
  • Reports: using the fundraising plan and database, create periodic fundraising reports.
  • Evaluation: Rigorously evaluate all efforts and progress toward goals.


The Development Manager must be adaptive and entrepreneurial, with a problem-solving and positive approach to their work. Specific qualifications include:

  • Must be mission-driven with a demonstrated commitment to social, racial, economic and environmental justice.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in fundraising, specifically grant writing and individual donor development.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major support from private and/or public sources.
  • Demonstrated success in meeting annual fund goals.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and communication skills.
  • Detail oriented and organized, with the strong ability to successfully multitask.
  • Ability to lead multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously, meeting all related deadlines with the ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work.
  • Commitment to professional ethics in working with confidential, sensitive information.
  • Extensive computer skills, including experience working with electronic donor tracking systems/databases.
  • Experience with the use of social media for marketing or fundraising campaigns preferred.


This is a full-time position. We offer a competitive starting salary between $60,000-75,000 (based on experience) and generous benefits, including covering full health benefit premiums (health, dental and vision) and a 401k plan with an employer contribution.


The position will ideally be located in a city in which one of the Partnership’s 20 affiliates is located, but we will consider exceptional candidates who are located in other cities and major media markets.
