Clarke provides children who are deaf or hard of hearing with the listening, learning and spoken language skills they need to succeed. Annually, nearly 1,000 children and their families benefit from programs and services at our five locations: Boston, Jacksonville, New York City, Northampton and Philadelphia.
Clarke impacts the lives of children and adults through educational and early childhood programs, hearing services, mainstream services, research, curriculum development and the teachers and professionals trained by Clarke who take their special skills to all parts of the world.
The CFO is responsible for ensuring the smooth and compliant financial operations of the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech in order to ensure that it functions effectively and efficiently. The CFO has financial oversight for all Clarke locations. This includes managing and safeguarding the School’s financial resources, as well as monitoring its adherence to the organization’s governing documents (e.g., the bylaws and Charter) and the guidelines of funding entities ( e.g. state/school district reimbursement and grant ). In addition, the CFO, along with the Finance department as a whole, is responsible for coordinating the execution of the organization’s investment policies (including due diligence and management), coordinating the annual audit, and implementing the financial policies and procedures prescribed by the Finance Committee (including the management of all reporting requirements and implementation of all internal controls).
The CFO is a member of the senior management team and plays a key role in enabling the organization to achieve its mission and operate efficiently. The individual will work closely with the CEO and the Board of Trustees, providing accurate and timely financial reporting on a consistent basis. The Finance Department is based in Northampton, MA. The CFO must be able to be present in the Northampton office a minimum of 60% of the time and more frequently when needed.
Chief Executive Officer
- Develop and assess internal control procedures to ensure proper legal, operational and grants management compliance and reporting.
- Implement and oversee overall sound fiscal policies while overseeing the accounting staff to ensure the use of generally accepted accounting principles and the maintenance of appropriate financial records.
- Monitor the School’s cash flow and plan for long-term operational needs and ensure availability of funds as needed.
- Maintains relationships with financial institutions in areas of banking, investment custodian and advisory services ensuring that the organization’s funds are invested and managed in accordance with investment guidelines.
- Manages the working capital positions of the organization and ensures compliance with all loan covenants and reporting requirements of the line of credit.
- Is involved with all financial obligations including leases, loans, contracts and other transactions requiring a commitment of financial resources.
- Leadership of the annual budgeting process working with members of the leadership team and others resulting in clear financial metrics used to manage all aspects of the School.
- Maintain internal controls and oversee the timely execution of all internal and independent financial audit activities. Provide updates and report results to the Finance, Audit and Executive Committees.
- Review quarterly reports and monthly activity to assess financial position and for distribution to Leadership Team and the Finance committee, including budget and variance information. Aid in developing reporting that can be utilized as a tool for decision-making.
- Provides program budget projections for grant proposals and regular financial reports to foundations and other donors. Establishes adequate plans for control of operations through budget forecasts.
- Potential relationship builder, partner with CDO and involvement with donor relations.
- Manages the organizations risk management program and works with insurance brokers to assure proper coverage for all business insurance lines at all locations.
- Oversees the independent internal audit as well as the various state audits for Massachusetts (UFR) and New York (CFR). Selects and evaluates internal controls and operating procedures that ensure protection of the organization’s assets.
- Responsible for timely filing of IRS Form 990.
- Assures compliance with financial contract requirements in the organization’s fulfillment of service contracts with school districts, counties, states and other entities.
- Active member of the Clarke Retirement Plan Investment Committee and consultant and partner with CHRO on Plan Administration.
- Monitor the high-level operation of the Blackbaud accounting system (e.g., responsibility for authorization of patches, updates, enhancements, and modifications).
- Review and sign off on purchase orders, contracts and checks in accordance with organization authorization thresholds and process.
- Remains up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
- Collaborate with other departments to develop accounting processes to ensure efficient grant-making and reconciliation of accounting & grant systems (Financial Edge and Razor’s Edge).
- Monitor tax and legislative developments relating to non-profit organizations and monitor compliance with IRS regulations & Treasury department guidelines.
- Understand and administer responsibilities related to contractual obligations and expenditures.
- Lead, mentor and develop Accounting team, managing work allocation, training and problem resolution, performance management and the building of a cohesive team dynamic.
- Coordinate with other school locations and departments to ensure operational effectiveness, particularly on items tied to financial reporting and analysis.
- Assist in special projects as directed by the CEO, Board, Finance, Audit or Executive Committees.

- A minimum of 10 years of broad finance experience as a CFO in a non-profit setting, gathering and evaluating financial information and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees, Committees and senior leadership.
- Excellent financial oversight skills and experience managing accounting, tax, budgeting, portfolio/investment oversight activities, control and reporting functions in both for-profit and non-profit entities.
- Strong analytical skills and experience translating a strategic vision into an operational model.
- Strong systems skills to effectively work with critical business applications in both financial and programmatic operations.
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including strong writing and presentation skills and the ability to share complex financial information with mission driven staff and advisors.
- A hands-on, operational orientation with highly developed customer service skills.
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in Business, Finance or Accounting, MBA preferred, CPA highly desirable.
- Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
