Director of Communications and Marketing

University Settlement | New York, New York


You will manage the Marketing & Communications Manager and the Communications Associate, as well as work collaboratively with the Managing Director, Individual Giving particularly as it relates to annual appeals and special events. You will be responsible for (1) the development and supervision of all communications, marketing and media relations efforts in support of each organization’s brand-building and fundraising goals and (2) coordination of special projects.

Job Summary

This is a pivotal leadership role on a three-person team that supports University Settlement, The Door, and Broome Street Academy. We work hard, move fast, and never know what today will bring while making sure to have fun.


What you would do: 

Strategic Communications Planning: Develop an annual strategic communications plan for each organization, complete with creative, targeted tactics that complement the Development Department’s larger fundraising goals for the year; as well as supporting the goal of community engagement, recruitment and advocacy

 Media Relations:

  •   Serve as the primary media contact for University Settlement, The Door, and Broome Street Academy
  •   Develop and implement a strategic annual media plan, focused on raising overall organizational visibility, as well as targeted visibility of key programs and leadership staff
  •   Identify additional opportunities for media engagement and field media inquiries and interview requests with an eye towards each organization’s communications goals
  •   Grow and update media contact list, and build relationships with members of the media
  •   Write and distribute press releases, letters to the editor, and pitch stories to media
  •   Coordinate media events and staff media interviews
  •   Provide media skills training workshops to organizational staff and participants, as needed

 Brand Awareness:

  •   Build brand identities for our three agencies with external audiences
  •   Develop and manage brand standards
  •   Work with the Marketing & Communications Manager to manage the development of organizational messaging and materials for various target audiences

Publications: Supervise the creation, writing and production of printed materials including  Online Communications:

  •   Provide primary oversight and quality control of websites for our three agencies
  •   Supervise the Communications Associate in the development of all online content

 Donor Communications: Provide guidance to the Managing Director, Individual Giving, on donor communications initiatives


What we are looking for:

  •   You have 5+ years of experience in marketing, communications, and fundraising
  •   You thrive in a busy environment and able to juggle multiple assignments on time, all the time
  •   You know communication is key. You are a doer with superb writing and editing skills
  •   Demonstrated media relations expertise
  •   Demonstrated outreach and marketing skills
  •   You can embrace change and adapt strategies for diverse projects 
  •   Demonstrated awareness and sensibility for print and web-based communications and marketing
  •   You have 2+ years’ experience leading staff
  •   You are willing to be an advocate for your program, participants and community
