The Internal Communications Manager is responsible for communicating the values, priorities, and activities of the National Audubon Society throughout the organization’s large, distributed staff structure. The manager will develop and implement a comprehensive, network-wide, dynamic, and inspiring internal communications strategy aimed at communicating news, accomplishments, executive decisions, strategic priorities and shifts, employee practices and culture to staff across the organization. In addition to partnering with key Audubon departments on organization-wide communications, the manager will be responsible for overseeing the strategic creation, writing, and editing of key internal communication projects and platforms. The Internal Communications Manager will champion Audubon’s mission and strategic initiatives and priorities, using communication and feedback channels to drive staff engagement and commitment while increasing impact and collaboration across the staff network. The manager will also possess a high degree of cultural competence and shape communications and internal processes in ways that explicitly support and engage employees of all genders, races, faiths, ethnicities, orientations, cultures, locations, and levels.

Reports to the Vice President, Communications.
- In collaboration with the VP, Communications, create a vision and serve as a clearinghouse for all internal communications, working with variety of internal clients, including senior executives, to translate concepts and messages into effective communications that help Audubon employees understand Audubon strategies and initiatives.
- Plan, write, produce and distribute internal news stories, memos, videos, and other products that promote Audubon’s work.
- Develop and implement an internal communications strategy based in Audubon’s Strategic Plan that promotes a unified Audubon voice across all conservation priorities, state and regional offices, centers and sanctuaries.
- Manage a robust range of internal communications channels, vehicles, and platforms for integrated work (internal emails, SharePoint, Slack, Zoom, staff calls and meetings).
- Ghost-write and edit internal messages and talking points/scripts for senior leaders.
- Ensure internal communication messages are consistent with external messages.
- Working with senior leaders, handle the internal communication response to crisis situations which affect organizational perception and reputation.
- Working with CTO and VP for HR, lead and execute the internal communications strategies for new Audubon technology and HR platforms.
- In collaboration with senior leaders, prepare communication resources to support flyway, state, and center leaders in their role as key parts of the communication chain.
- Continually measure and evaluate the internal communication needs of Audubon to respond and improve the effectiveness of internal communication strategies and the efficiency of tools and vehicles.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related experience required.
- 5+ years’ experience writing and managing internal communications. Experience working in a large distributed organization a strongly preferred.
- Journalistic ability to source and develop stories from employees all over the country as well as Audubon’s international program.
- Experience developing and executing internal communication strategies and evaluating/measuring the effectiveness of internal communications.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key clients across the organization.
- Must have excellent presentation and writing skills, with experience writing for a variety of voices and channels, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in-person and over telephone.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to interact comfortably with a broad spectrum within the organization to gain consensus.
- Strong project management skills required - ability to effectively manage project scope, teams, timelines, details and budgets.
- Must have strong customer service skills, with attention to detail.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to reason through issues and resolve problems while working efficiently under time constraints.
- Available to work extended hours to support weekend/holiday events and critical periods, such as organization crisis/emergencies.
- Proficiency with Sharepoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office and web-based products.
- Spanish language proficiency preferred.
- Adobe creative suite experience a plus.
