Job Summary

Right to Counsel Workgroup: LAFLA is part of the Right to Counsel Coalition which is comprised of dozens of legal services organizations and tenant organizing community based organizations. LAFLA is the lead organization of the County of Los Angeles Eviction Defense Program, and a participant in the County of Los Angeles Emergency Eviction Prevention Program.

Responsibilities

LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Managing Attorney.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Active membership in the California State Bar;
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the practice of law, including broad experience in lawyering skills, including client interviewing, legal research, writing, drafting, negotiation, law and motion and discovery techniques, and trial and appellate work;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable law and community legal needs;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle service cases and impact cases of a complex nature;
  • Knowledge of basic principles of administration and supervision;
  • Previous experience in a legal services program preferred;
  • Experience working with tenant organizing community based organizations; and
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff effectively at all levels of the Foundation.
  • EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  • Manage the Right to Counsel Workgroup pursuant to Foundation policies and procedures;
  • Supervise attorneys, paralegals and law students; coordinate intake, litigation, and administrative representation efforts of legal staff; evaluate performance of legal staff;
  • Co-manage the Los Angeles County Eviction Defense Program contract, including eight subcontractors;
  • Work on the larger Right to Counsel campaign in conjunction with a large Coalition;
  • In conjunction with the Grants and Contract manager participates in resource development for the unit, including identifying and pursuing grants and other funding;
  • Supervise the maintenance of proper case files and time records;
  • Cooperate with other Managing Attorneys and the Director of Impact Litigation & Policy to meet the overall goals of the Foundation;
  • Maintain liaison with the client community, client community groups and non-client community groups;
  • Implement LAFLA’s Performance Standards;
  • Encourage advocacy staff to develop specialized knowledge in more than one substantive are of poverty law and to act as a resource for their staff; and
  • Conduct case review meetings to ensure that legal services provided are consistent with LAFLA’s priorities, policies and procedures, and that they maximize office resources to provide the highest quality client services.
