Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC) is a fifty-year old, mission-driven advocacy and direct service nonprofit organization dedicated to removing barriers to educational and life opportunities for children and youth. Based in Boston, we employ a racial equity perspective to improve educational options for all children, while also helping one child and family at a time.
MAC seeks an enthusiastic, organized, and collaborative part-time (two days/week) Helpline Coordinator to oversee the system for providing information and technical assistance to parents and caregivers of children with disabilities. Reporting to the Managing Attorney, the Helpline Coordinator will interact directly with all aspects of the organization’s work.
This position involves: coordinating MAC Helpline staff, volunteers and interns to ensure Helpline callers receive accurate and timely information; working directly with families calling the Helpline; overseeing database management; and maintaining MAC’s Helpline Resources. Supervised by MAC’s Managing Attorney, the Helpline Coordinator will be the first point of contact for many callers to the Helpline. - Work with other staff to interview, select, train, and supervise Helpline volunteers to carry out all tasks related to responding to Helpline requests.
- Oversee assignment of incoming calls to MAC Helpline staff and volunteers and coordinate recording of information necessary to process Helpline calls.
- Work directly with families calling the Helpline.
- Maintain critical Helpline resources such as list of advocates and sample letters for use by callers.
- Work with Managing Attorney to recruit pro bono attorneys for the program and prepare reports using database information for program funders.
- Work effectively as part of a team of experienced attorneys and advocates.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in special education advocacy field, or disability related advocacy experience.
- Experience working in a busy team environment.
- Strong computer skills, including word processing, database and spreadsheet applications. Experience with legal case database applications preferred.
- Strong time-management skills, with an ability to manage many assignments at one time.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with flexibility, self-confidence and a sense of humor.
- Positive attitude, concern for people and community, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability.
- Demonstrated experience working with people of a range of cultures and backgrounds who may be facing stressful circumstances.
- Detail oriented with strong organizational and writing skills.
- This position is part-time at MAC’s office in downtown Boston, with easy access to a variety of public transit options (note: the office is currently working remotely due to COVID-19).
- Starting salary range is $50,000 per annum, pro-rated, commensurate with experience.
