Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) provides life-changing civil legal assistance to eligible residents in every part of the State. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Grants, Contracts and Compliance, the Foundation Grants Manager (FGM) is responsible for researching foundation grant opportunities and coordinating contractual support for all foundation grants initiated by the Grants, Contracts and Compliance department at Legal Aid Bureau, Inc. (Maryland Legal Aid/MLA).
This position has three primary areas of focus, along with other tasks to support the Grants, Contracts, and Compliance Department. The primary focus areas are:
1) Research to identify private/foundation sources of funding.
2) Proposal/Grant development and writing.
3) Management of private/foundation grants made to MLA in terms of record-keeping and compliance.
Director of Grants, Contracts and Compliance
- Research foundation grant opportunities and evaluate their alignment with MLA’s mission and funding strategy. Maintain an ongoing list of foundation grant opportunities and schedule of application due dates.
- Maintain paper and electronic recordkeeping and filing of all foundation grants applied for and received by MLA.
- Provide database management related to foundation grants, including tracking performance measurements, running progress reports, and creating other data visualization to illuminate the value of foundation grants to the organization.
- Coordinate application process related to foundation grants by reaching out to various stakeholders to ensure that all application documentation (i.e., narrative, budget, MOU(s) with partners, required attachments, etc.) is in order, and that the grant application steps are followed in detail, including on-time submission.
- Draft and edit portions of foundation grant applications and reports (e.g. mid-term, monthly, quarterly and/or final) in coordination with the Director of Grants, Contracts and Compliance and other staff as appropriate. Submit applications and reports as needed.
- Review foundation grant agreements for reporting requirements and create a process and calendar to meet the reporting deadlines with accuracy and timely submission.
- Communicate regularly within and across MLA with colleagues who currently implement foundation grants to ensure that all reporting and various grant implementation documentation is in order and grant requirements are fulfilled in a timely manner.
- Ensure that funder contacts for foundation and all other grants are up to date and available as needed for communication with the funding organization.
- Assist with compiling information about all grants (both foundation sourced and others) for a variety of uses, including, but not limited to: sharing with MLA leadership and staff; media relations; posting on social media platforms; preparation of collateral materials such as annual reports and subject-matter brochures; and presentations to members of the Board of Directors.
- Assist with site visits related to foundation grants, and other grants as necessary.
- Develop and maintain a resource portal on MLA’s SharePoint site to build knowledge and awareness within MLA for how to apply for and implement a foundation or other grant.
- Other duties as assigned.
B.A. and up to three years of relevant experience in a professional setting; individuals with experience in resource development preferred. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills; the capacity to multitask, prioritize, problem-solve, and maintain a high level of confidentiality; a thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Access, Power Point, and Word and an aptitude for learning data management software. Commitment to high-quality, accurate presentation of data is essential.
Must be interested in working in a mission focused nonprofit environment and must be flexible in terms of work schedule to meet the demands of the Grants, Contracts and Compliance Department.
