The Gates Millennium Scholars Program has announced its 2015 class of Millennium Scholars.
Hailing from forty-seven states, the District of Columbia, and seven U.S. territories, each of the one thousand college-bound students will receive a good-through-graduation award that covers the costs of attending the college or university of his or her choice, as well as academic and social assistance, mentoring, and leadership training. On average, more than 87 percent of Gates Millennium Scholars graduate within six years — a rate that is 28 percent higher than the national graduation rate for all college students and comparable to the rate for students from high-income families.
Established in 1999 to help develop the next generation of America's leaders, the $1.6 billion program is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the United Negro College Fund in partnership with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund. Each year, the program enables five thousand students to attend and graduate from hundreds of the most selective private and public schools in the country, including Ivy League universities, UNCF member institutions, flagship state universities, and other minority-serving institutions.
"We are constantly reminded that young people will need a quality education to remain competitive in the twenty-first century. For the twenty thousand young men and women who will attend college as Gates Millennium Scholars, the financial support, leadership training, mentoring, and academic and social support they receive will enable them to become college graduates and our next generation of leaders," said UNCF president and CEO Michael L. Lomax. "Through their generous funding and program support, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation amplifies the importance of investing in the next generation of extraordinary scholars to support our country's economic strength and competitiveness."
