The largest private gift for a multi-campus effort in the university system's history will match, on a one-to-one basis, additional gifts in support of the center, which will combine MBA programs at the University of Maine and University of Southern Maine into a single program within the new Graduate School of Business. To be located in Portland, the center also will bring the University of Maine School of Law and the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service graduate programs and its Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy together, with the goal of maximizing cross-disciplinary opportunities for students. The effort is part of the university system's One University Initiative, which is aimed at streamlining administrative functions and aligning resources to best support all families, businesses, and communities in the state.
To date, the Alfond Foundation has committed a total of $9.25 million to development of the center.
"Mr. Alfond believed that teamwork and partnership were essential elements to achiev[ing] transformative change in Maine," said Alfond Foundation board chair Greg Powell. "We were inspired by the transformative vision of the Maine Center, and by the tireless efforts of the chancellor, the system board of trustees, Eliot Cutler, faculty, administrators, and community leaders alike from across the state, to create a model that is truly unique, of the very highest quality, and that best serves the people of Maine."
