Baltimore Community Foundation Announces $1.4 Million Gift to Support Neighborhood Improvement Projects

The Baltimore Community Foundation has announced a $1.4 million gift from a foundation established through the will of former Maryland governor William Schaefer, who died in 2011, to the William Donald Schaefer Civic Fund.

The gift will boost the endowment of the Schaefer Civic Fund to $1.8 million and increase its total annual grantmaking by some $63,000. Since its creation in 2008, the fund has supported a range of projects, including a summer camp for youth, a mentoring program, local festivals, and community gardens and beautification projects across the region.

BCF also announced grants totaling $137,880 to twenty-eight organizations in Baltimore City and Baltimore County through its Neighborhood Grants Program. Grant recipients include the Franklin Square Community Association ($7,500), the Gwynns Falls Elementary School Foundation ($4,730), the Madison East End Community Association ($3,000), Paul's Place ($2,550), and the Winters Lane Advisory Board ($2,400).
