Benioffs Give $100 Million to UCSF Children’s Hospitals

The University of California, San Francisco has announced a second $100 million gift from Salesforce.com founder Marc Benioff and his wife, Lynne, to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland.

The gift, which follows a $100 million donation from the Benioffs to UCSF Children's Hospital in 2010, will be used to strengthen existing programs and expertise in basic and clinical research and patient care at the two institutions, as well as attract and retain top researchers. In recognition of the gift, the two hospitals — which formed an alliance in January to conduct research and offer comprehensive care — will be known going forward as UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals.

Fifty percent of the funds will be used to help build a new outpatient center at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, CEO Bert Lubin told the San Francisco Chronicle. UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco, the facility the first nine-figure gift from the Benioffs helped fund, will be part of a new 289-bed integrated hospital complex for children, women, and cancer patients that will open in 2015. Together, the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals — which treat all children regardless of a family's ability to pay — will take their place among the ten largest children's healthcare providers in the country.

"We want to make the investment necessary to really take UCSF to that level where we say we have the best children's hospital in the world," Marc Benioff told the Chronicle. "Not only are we including San Francisco in that vision, we're including Oakland."

"We are building a world-class pediatric facility that puts the needs of our patients and their families at the forefront," said Mark Laret, chief executive officer of UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco. "This donation ensures we can continue to advance the most innovative clinical care within the new hospital, as well as outside its walls, by partnering with colleagues at our research campus and with Children's Oakland physicians and staff."
