Buffett Gives $2.86 Billion to Gates, Children's Foundations

Billionaire investor and Giving Pledge signatory Warren Buffett has donated $2.86 billion in Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities, Reuters reports.

Buffett's eleventh annual contribution to the five charities —  part of his plan to give away most of his fortune before he dies — comprised 19.61 million Class "B" shares of Berkshire, according to a regulatory filing made last Thursday. The Gates Foundation received the lion's share of the gift — about 14.96 million shares worth approximately $2.2 billion — while the Susan Thompson Buffett, Sherwood, Howard G. Buffett, and NoVo foundations, which are managed by Buffett's children, Susan, Howard, and Peter, shared the rest.

Buffett's 2016 contributions boost to $24.3 billion the total he has donated to the five foundations since 2006.
