The gift will support a renovation of the 360-seat State Playhouse, including new seating, floor finishes and paint, as well as the installation of state-of-the-art audio/video, sound, and lighting equipment. Built in 1958, the theater was constructed as a showcase for student works but today serves a diverse audience of students and community residents. Renovations are scheduled to begin this summer.
Over the past thirty years the Ahmanson Foundation has been a major supporter of Cal State LA, providing more than $3 million for various projects, including the school's Honors College, music programs, and the arts.
"This gift from the Ahmanson Foundation underscores the crucial role the arts play in our society," said Cal State LA president William A. Covino. "We're grateful to the foundation for its generous support of higher education and the arts."
