The Chen Yidan Foundation, a private charitable foundation established by Charles Chen Yidan, a co-founder and advisor emeritus of Chinese Internet giant Tencent, has announced a $4 million grant in support of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's redesign of its master's in education program as well as a new visiting fellows program.
The funding includes $3 million in support of the redesign effort and $1 million to establish the Chen Yidan Global Visiting Fellows Program. With the goal of making the master's program more globally oriented and responsive to future challenges, the redesign will focus on developing a foundational body of professional knowledge, shared dispositions, and highly valued skills across the many roles in the field of education.
A crucial part of that effort, the Chen Yidan Global Visiting Fellows Program will bring scholars and practitioners from a range of regions and professional backgrounds — including industry, research and scholarship, policy, and entrepreneurship — to teach at HGSE, where they will exchange ideas with Harvard faculty, students, and the broader university community. Starting this fall and continuing over the next five years, the fellows program will enable HGSE to build a network of education scholars and practitioners around the world.
"Harvard University is a world-class center of education and knowledge building, so it brings me great joy to play a role in the redesign of the master's education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education," said Chen Yidan. "I look forward to this partnership, and I believe that the creation of the Chen Yidan Global Visiting Fellows Program will help to elevate the profession of education and enable the school to draw more talent into the field by creating a versatile, highly respected degree that will appeal to individuals from all backgrounds. Education has the power to transform lives and make the world a better place, and this is achievable through uncovering, nurturing, and expanding human potential to meet the needs and challenges of an ever-changing world. I am proud to be partnering with HGSE in my mission to create a better world through education."
