Citadel Receives $4 Million Gift for College of Education

The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, has received a $4 million gift from local businesswoman and philanthropist Anita Zucker and her family in support of its School of Education.

Made as part of the military college's LEAD Plan 2018 campaign, the gift will provide support for current programs at the School of Education as well as an expansion of its curriculum. Among other things, the funds will be used to establish the Anita Zucker Institute for Entrepreneurial Educational Leadership, as well as an endowed chair in educational entrepreneurship. A portion of the gift also will be used to establish the Anita Zucker Endowment for Literacy Education, income from which will be earmarked for need-based scholarships for teachers seeking to complete graduate-level literacy education certificate or degree programs, as well as the design and delivery of literacy workshops. In recognition of the gift, the school will be renamed the Zucker Family School of Education.

Chairperson and CEO of the InterTech Group, Zucker is a graduate of the University of Florida, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in education. She received her master of education degree from the University of North Florida and taught elementary school for more than a decade. Zucker is a past president of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and one of the founders of the Education Foundation of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. She currently serves on the board of the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina, of which she is a past president, and is as a trustee of the Saul Alexander Foundation and the Jewish Endowment Fund, supporting organizations of the Coastal Community Foundation.

"Anita's lifelong commitment to education is evident throughout the state and far beyond its borders," said Citadel president Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. "Her drive to repair the world through careful and intentional giving demonstrates true principled leadership. This gift to establish the Zucker Family School of Education at the Citadel will transform the way we operate, significantly enhancing our ability to educate and prepare the next generation of teachers and school administrators to serve in classrooms across the Lowcountry and throughout the nation."
