St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis has announced a $20 million commitment from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation in support of inpatient care for children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
The gift will help fund construction of a seventeen-bed care unit at the hospital's new Kay Research and Care Center. To be named in honor of the foundation and scheduled to open in 2016, the unit will provide an enhanced patient care experience, with digital technology and more space to accommodate patient and family needs.
"The foundation's gift will help St. Jude Children's Research Hospital continue to excel in providing the best care possible for our patients and their families, while continuing to search for cures for pediatric cancer and other deadly diseases," said Richard Shadyac, Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
"When you walk into St. Jude, you can immediately tell how much care, treatment, and attention go into making each patient's stay as comfortable as possible," said Cohen Foundation president Alex Cohen. "It is so important to Steven and me that all children — regardless of their financial circumstances or ability to pay — have access to the same medical treatments and level of care, and St. Jude goes above and beyond in every way. We are honored to help them continue to give unparalleled care to children and their families."
