Community Foundation Update (04/01/17)

The California attorney general's office has confirmed that the findings of the Ventura County Community Foundation released last June with respect to its financial issues were accurate and has issued a number of recommendations to the foundation's board. In September 2015, VCCF provided the AG's office with extensive, detailed assessments of its concerns in addition to a series of proposed corrective actions that included rigorous cost-cutting measures. In a recently released letter, the AG's office instructs the foundation to take additional corrective actions. Under the terms of the agreement, the foundation will return $3.8 million it had used to purchase a building; replenish $1.8 million of lost or under-earned investment income to the affected funds and work with independent consultants to develop new financial procedures and policies; and provide additional fiduciary training over the next six months to current and future board members. The AG's office also agreed to the stipulation that the corrective actions not be seen as an acknowledgment of wrongdoing by the foundation's board.

The San Francisco Foundation has appointed Abdi Soltani, executive director of the ACLU of Northern California, to a five-year term on its board. Prior to joining the ACLU, Abdi served as a community organizer and led a number of public policy campaigns in the state.
