The San Diego Foundation has announced that the availability of grants of up to $20,000 for partnering artists and nonprofits arts and culture organizations through its Creative Catalyst Program. Artists may choose any qualified, willing arts organization and pair independently with them to submit a joint application; artists are no longer required to apply to pre-selected organizations. The deadline to submit a joint application is December 11, 2017.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced Melany Duval as its vice president of development and Milton Speid as its director of development for SVCF's eastern region.


The Hartford Foundation for Planned Giving has announced an $833,000 grant in support of six Brighter Futures Family Centers. The centers are located in the Asylum Hill, Behind the Rocks, Blue Hills, Frog Hollow, Clay Arsenal, and Parkville neighborhoods.


The Boston Foundation has announced it will receive $50 million — the largest gift in its history — as part of the transfer of a majority investment in Billerica, Massachusetts-based education company Curriculum Associates. The gift, awarded through the Iowa State University Foundation, increased substantially from the initial amount announced in January due to the company's rapid growth in the months before the transaction was finalized. A substantial portion of the gift will be used to bolster the Boston Foundation's Permanent Fund for Boston, the foundation's endowment for strategic grantmaking; create a corporate donor-advised fund; and make targeted additional investments.


The Columbus Foundation has announced that it awarded nearly $206 million in 2016. The foundation also announced that it will conduct its signature online giving campaign, The Big Give, for the first time since 2014. In 2016, grants from Columbus Foundation donors totaled an all-time high of $205.8 million and benefited more than 3,300 nonprofit organizations. Gifts made to new and existing funds and supporting foundations totaled $314.7 million — marking the seventh consecutive year of gifts exceeding $100 million. The foundation's assets, held in 2,440 funds and twenty-eight supporting foundations, totaled $2.01 billion as of the end of 2016.


According to a report from the Pennsylvania Economy League, fiscal decay has accelerated in all types and sizes of Commonwealth municipalities over the last twenty-four years, jeopardizing Pennsylvania's health and economic competitiveness. The study, Communities in Crisis: The Truth and Consequences of Municipal Fiscal Distress in Pennsylvania, 1970 – 2014, which was funded by a statewide coalition of eleven community foundations, including the Pittsburgh Foundation, looked at 2,388 of the state's 2,561 municipalities for which there was consistent data from 1970, 1990, and 2014 and found that the tax base has fallen on average in cities since 1970, while the percentage taken from a municipality's tax base in the form of taxes to pay for services has increased on average for all municipalities since 1990.


The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced that the Samara Fund, one of its component funds, has awarded $65,000 in grants and scholarships. The funding includes $55,000 to eighteen nonprofits and $10,000 for scholarships to five high school seniors. Nonprofit recipients include the Vermont Pride Festival and Parade, the New England Youth Theatre, Outright Vermont, and Vermont CARES.

Washington, D.C.

The Greater Washington Community Foundation (formerly the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region) has announced that the Resilience Fund, a collaborative partnership among the Greater Washington Community Foundation, the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, and other foundation and individual contributors, has awarded a rapid response grant of $25,000 to Ayuda so it can better address the urgent and immediate need for emergency clinics to prepare and file Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewal applications in Washington, D.C., northern Virginia, and Maryland before the October 5 filing deadline. Ayuda also will provide legal services and consultations to advise DACA recipients regarding possible avenues of relief that may be available to them.
