The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that Railroad Park has been recognized with the 2014 Urban Revitalization Award from the American Horticultural Society. The award is given to an individual, institution, or company for significant contributions to urban horticulture and the beautification of American cities. The park is also featured in the March/April issue of The American Gardener. In 2006, the foundation committed $1 million to a three-park project that included the creation of Railroad Park, which opened in 2010.


The Indian River Community Foundation in Vero Beach has appointed former America Online president Ray Oglethorpe to a three-year term on its board of directors.


The Elkhart County Community Foundation has awarded more than $580,000 in grants this quarter, including $250,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Goshen, the Elkhart Truth reports. The Boys and Girls Club will use the funding to renovate and expand its kitchen, learning center, and entryway and improve its offices and small meeting rooms.

The Porter County Community Foundation in Valparaiso has announced grants totaling more than $81,000 to eleven nonprofit organizations in support of programs and the purchase of equipment. Recipients include Frontline Foundations, Habitat for Humanity of Porter County, Mental Health America of Porter County, and the Portage Township Food Pantry.


The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas in Pittsburg is assisting individual donors who want to help those affected by the tornado that touched down in Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Quapaw, Oklahoma, on April 27, the Joplin Globe reports. While there already is a disaster relief fund at the foundation, donors can also establish funds for specific projects in Baxter Springs and Quapaw.


The Harrisburg-based Foundation for Enhancing Communities has announced grants totaling nearly $17,000 to local nonprofits through the Perry County Community Foundation. Recipients include the Arc of Cumberland and Perry Counties, Perry County Animal Rescue, the Perry County Council of the Arts, Retired Senior Volunteer Program of the Capital Region, and the Perry County Food Bank.


The Kitsap Community Foundation in Silverdale has awarded twenty-six grants totaling some $90,000, the Central Kitsap Reporter reports. Recipients include the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Clear Creek Trail, Kitsap Adult Center for Education, Salish Sea Expeditions, and the U.S. Lighthouse Society. In addition, six local students received scholarships ranging from $800 to $1,000 for the 2014-15 academic year.
