California
The San Diego Foundation has announced $442,000 in grants to eleven local programs working to connect, protect, and increase access to nature for underserved children and families in the region. Recipients include SAY San Diego, the Earth Discovery Institute, Outdoor Outreach, and Ocean Connectors.
Colorado
The Community Foundation Boulder County has announced the selection of six finalists in its inaugural nonprofit pitch contest, Pledge 1% Colorado. Chosen from a field of twenty applicants, the finalists for the $20,000 prize were Boulder Day Nursery, Boulder Food Rescue, Community Cycles, El Centro Amistad, Imagine!, and the "I Have a Dream" Foundation of Boulder County.
Massachusetts
The GALE (Gay and Lesbian Equity) Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation has announced $6,450 in grants to seven local nonprofit organizations in support of their work on issues affecting the region's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community. Recipients include the Barnstable Senior Center, Camp Lightbulb, the Homeless Prevention Council, and PFLAG of Cape Cod.
New York
The Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley in Poughkeepsie has announced that it will honor Mark V. Dennis and Bruce H. Tuchman at its annual Professional Advisors Breakfast on May 23. The event recognizes Dennis's and Tuchman's dedication to and support of the foundation and their work helping clients achieve their philanthropic goals.
Ohio
The Cleveland Foundation has announced that it has joined an exploratory group working to establish a Say Yes to Education chapter in Cleveland. Say Yes works to ensure that every child in a community has the opportunity and support to go to college. Over the next twelve to eighteen months, the exploratory group will work to determine the parameters of and criteria for providing "last-dollar" tuition scholarships, which are designed to fill the gap between financial aid and the real cost of college, to qualifying students admitted to an in-state college or university; establish a local fundraising committee; and identify additional in-school and out-of-school supports and services and related public and philanthropic funding sources to meet the development needs of every child in the region. If Say Yes approves the city's application, the organization would commit $15 million over six years to finance a community-wide governance structure to manage the partnership and seed student and family supports.
Pennsylvania
The Philadelphia Foundation has announced the appointments of Lon R. Greenberg, Evelyn McNiff, and Andrew R. Rogoff to its board of managers.
Vermont
The Vermont Community Foundation has announced it will co-host with its Vermont Women's Fund a screening of Dream, Girl, a documentary about women entrepreneurs on May 23. Dream, Girl showcases the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs and the risks they take to achieve their dreams. After the screening, there will be a Q&A panel of local women entrepreneurs.
Washington
The Seattle Foundation has announced it is accepting nominations for its Patsy Collins Award for Excellence in Education, Environment, and Community through May 31. Established by an anonymous donor in memory of Collins, the award honors extraordinary teachers in Washington K-12 schools with awards of $10,000 to three teachers or teams. In particular, the foundation is seeking nominations for educators who extend learning beyond the classroom — teachers who inspire their students through projects that relate to environmental and community stewardship.
Wisconsin
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced grants of $200,000 each to enable two researchers in the University of Wisconsin system to pursue innovative approaches to advancing human health while supporting their career development. The foundation's Shaw Scientist Award program recognized Ionel Popa, an assistant professor of physics at UW-Milwaukee, and Ophelia Venturelli, an associate professor of biochemistry at UW-Madison. For more than thirty years, the program has supported early career investigators seeking innovative solutions in biochemistry, biological sciences, and cancer research.
