Community Foundation Update (6/18/16)


The Juneau Community Foundation has announced that the board of its Pipeline Skate Park Special Project is working to raise $15,000 to renovate the site. The goal includes $5,000 to reconstruct a section of the skate park and $10,000 for repairs to the roof. In addition, the City and Borough of Juneau have bought materials to build a French drain to protect the foundation of the park from water damage.


In the wake of the  mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, the Phoenix-based Arizona Community Foundation has announced a grant of $10,000 to the OneOrlando Fund, a joint initiative of the Central Florida Foundation and the City of Orlando to meet the needs of survivors of the shooting, the victims' families, and the communities affected by the tragedy. The funds are a gift from ACF's Center for LGBTQ Philanthropy and its steering committee.


The Calaveras Community Foundation in Angels Camp has announced Career and Technical Training scholarships to six area high school students. Three Calaveras High School students, two Bret Harte High students, and one student from Mountain Oaks will each receive $1,500.


The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has announced the launch of an initiative to help formerly homeless families gain their financial footing. Developed in collaboration with United Way Suncoast, the Financial Sustainability Initiative helps clients become more financially literate and gain confidence in their financial decisions as they work to build actual assets, including bank accounts and a credit score. The initial class includes several once-homeless families that were stabilized and housed through the Family Haven Alliance, a product of GCCF's Homeless Children and Families initiative.


The Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with Louisville Visual Art, has announced that local abstract painter, sculptor, and digital fabrication artist Rebecca Norton has been awarded the fourth annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art. Norton will use the prize to pursue a mentorship in digital modeling and fabrication techniques with Erik S. Guzman and Kari Britta Lorensai at the Digital Fabrication Residency in Easton, Maryland, and to study and sketch so-called gravity hills in Burkittsville, Maryland, and New Paris, Pennsylvania. Gravity hills are roadside attractions where objects appear to roll uphill. Norton also will spend time at an artist's retreat in Bedford, Pennsylvania.


The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced that Rich Homberg, president and CEO of Detroit Public Television, was awarded the 2016 Mariam C. Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership. Homberg, who has served the station since 2008, was recognized for leading a successful $22 million capital campaign to build a state-of-the-art broadcast facility; partnering with Michigan State University to provide 24/7 programming for children and families statewide; bringing classical music back to Detroit through the organization's radio station, WRCJ, which operates in partnership with Detroit Public Schools; and expanding DPTV's offering in arts and culture through partnerships with  local organizations, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Sphinx, and others.

North Carolina

The Community Foundation of Henderson County has announced scholarships totaling $180,650 to ninety-eight students, many of whom will be eligible for renewal scholarships in subsequent years. In addition, previous scholarship recipients received renewals totaling $229,850, bringing the total dollar amount of CFHC scholarship awards for the 2016-17 academic year to $410,500.


The Seattle Foundation has announced a partnership with King County Elections to fund community-based voter engagement efforts in Chinese, Korean, Latino, and Vietnamese communities in the region. Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded to projects designed to register voters in these communities and help voters who are already registered receive a ballot in their preferred language.
