Community Foundation Update (7/02/16)


The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced the launch of Caring Together Lompoc, a public awareness campaign that aims to help people self-identify as a "caregiver" and understand that they are not alone. Part of the foundation’s Community Caregiving Initiative, which champions the commitment being made by local caregivers, the effort is being conducted in partnership with the City of Lompoc and a network of healthcare organizations and community.


The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County has announced $3,500 in BRAVO Fund grants to improve the quality of life for Latinos in Boulder County. Recipients include the Boulder County Fair, Cal-Wood Education Center, Intercambio Uniting Communities, and Variety Arts of Louisville dba the Underground. According to the foundation, Latinos are the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in the county.


The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced scholarships totaling more than $1 million to one hundred and twenty-three students. The foundation administers more than a hundred scholarship funds that have been established by donors committed to education, many of which are named in the memory of a loved one. Since 1983, the organization has awarded more than $9.3 million in scholarship grants to over nineteen hundred students.


The Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth has announced two hundred and twenty-one grants totaling $1.3 million through its Community Building Grant Program. Grants ranging from $500 to $10,000 were awarded in support of educational and cultural programs, including many that directly benefit children, older residents, and new residents of the state. Recipients include Healthy Peninsula, Coastal Enterprises, Twin Villages Foodbank Farm, and Gardeners Growing Healthy Communities.


The Boston Foundation has announced quarterly grants from its discretionary fund totaling $1.1 million. Six of the grants were issued through the foundation’s arts and culture program, with others awarded in the areas of education reform (three), neighborhoods and housing (three), cross-cutting strategy and special opportunities (two), health and wellness (one), jobs and economic development (one), and nonprofit effectiveness (one).


The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has appointed Mary Harper to its board of trustees.


The Omaha Foundation has announced twenty grants totaling $300,000 through its African American Unity Fund and Futuro Latino Fund. Recipients include the Salem Baptist Church, City Sprouts South, Matters on Tomorrow, and the Omaha Freedom Writers Foundation.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced a partnership with the Mary Gale Foundation, a private grantmaking foundation, to assist low-income women 65 and older in the greater Manchester area.


The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh grants program, a partnership with the Heinz Endowments, has awarded $204,480 in grants in support of artist projects and presenting and producing organizations in the fields of dance, film, music, and other disciplines. Since its inception in 2010, the program has awarded $3.7 million in grants to promote the rich history and raise awareness of art rooted in the black experience. Gabriel Colombo, Jasmine Hearn, Marcel Walker, and other individual artists received a total of $58,480, while artist residencies totaling $45,000 were awarded to the Homewood Artist Residency, the Legacy Arts Project, and the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh. In addition, unrestricted and operating grants totaling $100,000 were awarded to Afrika YETU, the Harambee Ujima Arts & Cultural Association, the Kente Arts Alliance, the MLK Community Mural Project, and the Staycee Pearl Dance Project.

West Virginia

The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has announced that it will match the first $10,000 it raises for flood relief efforts in the state. All monies raised for disaster relief by the foundation will be shared by the American Red Cross and the West Virginia VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). An interdenominational effort, VOAD coordinates resources and efforts for many different volunteer groups in the flood-ravaged areas.
