Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that its Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services has awarded a record $50,000 in grants to ten organizations focused on helping companion animals (dogs, cats, and horses) in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties. Recipients include MomaKat Rescue, the Animal League of Birmingham, Bama Bully Rescue, and Special Equestrians.

Alaska

The Juneau Community Foundation has announced that Wells Fargo Bank has made a $10,000 gift in support of the Juneau Housing First Project, which is working to provide thirty-two permanent supportive housing units targeting the city’s chronically homeless population. The foundation has been working with the Housing First Collaborative to raise the final $200,000 toward the group's $7.3 million goal.

California

The San Diego Foundation has announced more than $2.7 million in scholarships to nine hundred students pursuing higher education during the 2017-18 school year. The scholarships are made possible through a hundred and seventy-seven unique charitable funds established by donors through the foundation’s Community Scholarship Program.

The Community Foundation for Monterey County awarded grants totaling $15.4 million to more than five hundred organizations in 2016 and received contributions totaling $34.5 million, the Monterey Herald reports. The foundation attributed the 57 percent boost in its grantmaking to the generosity of its donor advisors and a $1 million increase in support for the Monterey County Gives! campaign, which raised more than $3.6 million.

Florida

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has announced the appointment of Jennifer Johnston as its senior community investment officer and the promotions of Wendy Deming to the position of chief operating officer and Erica Furo to the position of knowledge management officer.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced that Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) was selected as the winner of the 2017 Out of the Blue grant, an unsolicited $50,000 grant recognizing a deserving nonprofit in the region. Based in Washington, D.C., but with a sizable field office in Boston, KIND provides legal resources and representation, either in the form of a KIND staff member or in partnership with law offices that provide pro bono services, to children in the U.S. immigration system. In the greater Boston area, KIND and its pro bono partners currently are representing more than six hundred children.

Pennsylvania

The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania in Williamsport has invited proposals for grant opportunities in support of nonprofit organizations serving residents of Lycoming and Union counties, NorthcentralPA.com reports. The deadline for applications to the Lindig Lewisburg Foundation Fund, the Lycoming Economic Development Foundation Fund, and the Pearls with a Passion Fund is September 29.

South Carolina

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has announced grants totaling $162,731 to three local organizations. The recipients are the Arrhythmia Alliance, The Sandbox — An Interactive Children's Museum, and Savannah Children’s Choir.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced grants totaling $60,500 to twenty-eight organizations in support of local projects across the state. Awarded as part of the foundation's Small and Inspiring program, the grants include $1,500 for the Human Powered Parade and Festival, $2,500 in support of the Friends of Hiland Hall Gardens, $2,500 in support of the Brighton Community Forum, and $1,000 in support of the Worksong Project.

Washington, D.C.

The Greater Washington Community Foundation (formerly known as the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region) has announced grants totaling $1.5 million to community organizations working to prevent violence. Awarded by the Office of the Mayor through the City Innovation Fund’s Safer, Stronger DC Community Opportunity Grant Competition, which is administered by the foundation, the grants will support efforts to reduce incidents of violent crime; improve the health, well-being, and quality of life of residents in priority communities; increase community and civic participation; and engage residents in meaningful and productive activities. Recipients include the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop, City Year D.C., Exodus Treatment Center, and Men Can Stop Rape.
