Community Foundation Update (8/08/15)

California

The San Francisco Foundation and the Full Circle Fund have announced an expanded partnership in support of the Founders Pledge, a fund program that engages founders of companies to pledge at least 1 percent of their company's equity toward positive social change in their communities. With local interest in impact investing and economic sustainability continuing to grow, the campaign expects to see its community of pledge-makers increase to a hundred by the end of year. Since the pledge was launched a year ago, twenty-eight companies have joined the campaign.

Connecticut

The Connecticut Community Foundation in Waterbury has announced more than $41,000 in grants in support of women and girls, including $31,000 to aid victims of abuse. The Women's Fund awarded its first grants after it shifted its focus to fostering self-esteem and resilience in girls and young women. Inaugural grants were awarded to the Girl Scouts of Connecticut, Girls Inc. of Southwestern Connecticut, and the Waterbury Youth Services System. To serve victims of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, as well as sexual assault and domestic violence, grants were awarded to seven organizations, including the Susan B. Anthony Project, Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, and the MILLA Project.

Florida

The Community Foundation of Collier County in Naples has announced that it distributed a record $10.27 million to five hundred and eighty-three organizations during its most recent fiscal year, which ended on June 30. Of that amount, nearly $6.66 million was awarded to local nonprofits.

The Brooklyn Community Foundation has announced that it will award $100,000 in Crown Heights. As part of its new core program strategy focused on youth, neighborhoods, and nonprofits, the foundation has committed to developing a resident-led grantmaking model in support of Brooklyn's underserved neighborhoods, starting with its new home of Crown Heights and informed by the experience of local stakeholders. The funds will be distributed through the Crown Heights Grants Program of the foundation’s Neighborhood Strength initiative.

The New York Community Trust has announced a grant of $441,000 to the Union Settlement Association to expand Photos and Me, a high-impact literacy curriculum for elementary school children whose families speak a language other than English in the home. The grant was made from the NYCT's Brooke Astor Fund for New York City Education.
