Community Foundation Update (8/15/15)


The Arizona Community Foundation in Phoenix has announced grants and scholarship distributions totaling more than $11 million during the first quarter of its fiscal year. Awards included $5.2 million in support of health innovations, nearly $4.1 million in education grants and scholarships, $1.25 million in support of community development initiatives, $684,232 for the environment and sustainability efforts, and $546,705 in support of the arts.


The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced that its LEAF Initiative has awarded four grants totaling $50,000 to advance regional strategies aimed at boosting land conservation, improve ecosystem health, ensure the viability of agriculture, and improve local food systems. The recipients include the California Institute of Environmental Studies ($10,000), the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County ($15,000), the Trust for Public Land ($15,000), and Your Children's Trees ($10,000).


The Community Foundation of Louisville has appointed Dana Johnson as its new director of giving and donor partnerships.

New York

The New York Community Trust has announced that ten nonprofits have been selected as semifinalists in the Nonprofit Excellence Awards program, which was created by the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York and is managed in collaboration with NYCT and Philanthropy New York. Selected on their performance in eight areas of excellence — focus on results, governance, financial management, diverse and culturally competent organizational practices, human resources, information technology, communications, and fundraising and resource development — the ten organizations are in the running to win $60,000 in prizes as well as tuition scholarships for the Columbia Business School Executive Education Programs in Social Enterprise.

The Central New York Community Foundation in Syracuse has announced that its affiliate, the Greater Pulaski Endowment Fund, has awarded grants totaling $9,200 in support of three local organizations: the Rural and Migrant Ministry of Oswego County ($1,000), the Pulaski Historical Society ($4,700), and Preservation Revitalization of Pulaski ($3,500).


The Columbus Foundation has announced grants totaling $744,490 in support of organizations working to strengthen central Ohio. Recipients include FutureReady Columbus, 4 Paws for Ability, CATCO-Phoenix, the Deaf Services Center, and Enroll America.


The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, one of its charitable entities, has awarded ten grants totaling nearly $2 million in support of cutting-edge scientific research at Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, Pennsylvania State University, Lehigh, Ursinus College, and the University of Pennsylvania. New Investigator grants awarded by the foundation will provide $150,000 over two years to seven researchers, while three established scientists will receive New Initiative Research grants of $300,000 over two years.


The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced that more than twenty vacant lots are being transformed into urban orchards and pocket parks through a matching grant secured by a consortium of city and philanthropic agencies. As a recipient of the Bloomberg Award for Partners for Places — a project of the Funders' Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities — GMF is partnering with the City of Milwaukee and other members of the Community Development Alliance, including Northwestern Mutual Foundation, the Fund for Lake Michigan and Zilber Family Foundation, to expand the city's capacity for urban agriculture and add functional green space to local neighborhoods. The project builds off Milwaukee's past successes in transforming vacant spaces and putting neighborhood residents to work in improving their own communities.
