Alaska

The Rasmuson Foundation has announced that Qatar's ambassador to the United States, Mohammed Jaham Al Kuwari, made a $25,000 grant in support of its Domestic Violence Shelter Improvements Program. Administered by the Juneau-based Alaska Community Foundation, the program, now in its second year, is a partnership of Alaska organizations working to address immediate needs at all seventeen of Alaska's domestic violence shelters.

California

The San Diego Foundation has announced nearly $300,000 in grants in support of seven programs at five organizations working to nurture the career paths of future scientists and develop unique and innovative discoveries in the science, technology, and environment fields. Recipients of the Blasker Science and Technology grants and the Blasker Environment grants, which are awarded through the Blasker-Rose-Miah Endowment Fund at the San Diego Foundation, include San Diego State University, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego Mesa College, California State University-San Marcos, and the BIOCOM Institute.

The Calaveras Community Foundation in Angels Camp has announced a $5,000 gift from Pacific Gas and Electric in support of its Career and Technical Training Scholarship Fund. Established in 2010, the fund helps students in the area pay for community college and trade-school certificate programs.

Colorado

The Denver Foundation has announced a three-year, $200,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in support of its efforts to deepen, leverage, and boost philanthropy among communities of color in the region. Announced during Black Philanthropy Month, the grant will help fund the foundation’s Elevating Philanthropy in Communities of Color initiative, which aims to broaden the definition of what it means to be a philanthropist and to acknowledge the history of philanthropic contributions of people of color, including time, talent, treasure, and testimony.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced that it is partnering with the Joyce Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, the Polk Bros. Foundation, the Woods Fund Chicago, and other funders to establish the Chicago Safe Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities. Through the initiative, a total of $300,000 will be awarded to groups, agencies, and organizations working to provide community-based solutions aimed at making Chicago neighborhoods safer. Applications must be submitted by September 30, and all activities must be completed by October 31.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Community Foundation in Concord has announced Cloe Dickson as the winner of the annual Peter Millimet Creative Writing Award. Established in 1976 by the parents of Peter Millimet, who was killed in a car accident at the age of 23, the Peter Millimet Creative Writing Fund recognizes the writing talents of Manchester high school students and provides cash prizes they can apply to a college savings account. Dickson will attend the University of Colorado.

Virginia

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia in Oakton has announced the launch of the Innovation Breakfast Series, which is designed to introduce new ideas about challenges facing the region, with a focus on the role that innovation and philanthropy can play in addressing them.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced a partnership with Forterra, an environmental services organization, and King County to conserve important lands and enhance recreational opportunities in south King County. The foundation recently received a bequest of $392,000 to secure park lands in the county and used some of it to purchase a five-acre addition to the 925-acre complex at Spring Lake-Lake Desire Park, including a portion of Peterson Creek, which flows to the Cedar River. Additional projects are in negotiation.
