New York Governor George E. Pataki has announced that the state will provide a free college education for family members of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in an effort to help ease their worries about the future.
The benefit will cover tuition, room, board, and other fees at all city, state, and private colleges and universities in New York. Spouses, children, and stepchildren of victims, as well as family members of those left disabled as a result of the disaster, will be eligible for the offer. The boards of state and city universities are expected to pass resolutions supporting Pataki's executive order.
"I would hear again and again, 'How am I going to pay for my child's education?'" Pataki told CNN. "This is another major step we can take to ease, in some small way, the suffering and the sorrow of those whose loved ones were lost in this catastrophe."
