Echoing Green Announces 2017 Fellowships for Social Entrepreneurs

Echoing Green, a global social venture fund based in New York City, has announced the 2017 recipients of its fellowships for emerging social entrepreneurs.

Selected from nearly twenty-nine hundred applicants in a hundred and sixty-four countries, thirty-six fellows will receive seed funding of up to $90,000 over two years as well as mentoring and leadership development opportunities in support of their innovative solutions to global challenges in the areas of economic development, education, health, justice and human rights, hunger and poverty alleviation, racial and gender equity, and the environment.

This year's fellows include Ngor Majak Anyieth of Education Bridge, which is working to develop a generation of peacemakers and transformational leaders in South Sudan; Sandra Kwak of Haiti-based 10Power, which hopes to provide renewable energy to the 1.3 billion people worldwide who lack electricity through  collaborations focused on renewable project development and finance; Lucas Mason-Brown and Yeshimabeit Milner of Data for Black Lives, which is working to create measurable change in the lives of African Americans by mobilizing scientists around racial justice issues; Swapna Reddy of Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP), which is responding to the wrongful deportation of refugees from the United States by providing rapid, remote legal aid to underserved refugee communities and individuals; and Kotchakorn Voraakhom of Porous City Network, which seeks to strengthen urban resilience and adaptability in vulnerable communities in Bangkok, Thailand, by reclaiming "urban porosity" through the creation of a network of green spaces.

The organization's 2017 fellowships are supported in part by the Jerome L. Greene Foundation and the ZOOM Foundation. Including the latest cohort of fellows, Echoing Green will have invested over $42.5 million in seed-stage funding and strategic assistance to more than seven hundred and sixty best-in-class leaders driving positive social change in eighty-six countries.

"For the past thirty years Echoing Green has identified leaders with bold ideas that are important to the progress of the world," said Echoing Green president Cheryl L. Dorsey. "In [2017] — Echoing Green's thirtieth anniversary — we're especially proud to continue to grow our community and welcome such a diverse group of innovators to our best-in-class network. We look forward to advancing their leadership journey."
