Univision Communications Inc. has announced a partnership with the California Endowment and other foundations to raise support for organizations working to provide humanitarian assistance to Central American children who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border.
Grants of $500,000 from the California Endowment, $300,000 from the James Irvine Foundation, and $50,000 from the Marguerite Casey Foundation will be used to expand Univision's "Estamos Con Los Niños" ("We Are With the Children") awareness-raising campaign across the company's media platforms and channels, with the aim of raising funds for organizations working to assist children who have fled extreme hardship and life-threatening violence in Central America. Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees and Hispanics in Philanthropy will help ensure that the funds raised go to key community organizations working on the front lines of the crisis.
Save the Children will lead the effort to generate phone, text message, and online donations from Univision audiences and will re-grant those funds to a variety of organizations, including Catholic Charities USA, CARECEN (Central American Resource Center), and Kids In Need of Defense (KIND).
"These are children — innocent and vulnerable children — who need our help," said California Endowment president and CEO Robert K. Ross. "By providing a grant to catalyze this effort, the California Endowment wanted to do our part to make sure these refugee children, who have overcome so much trauma and hardship, are able to live whole and healthy lives. We're energized by the commitment we're seeing from other foundations, like the James Irvine Foundation, and we welcome the participation of other philanthropic foundations and corporations in this effort. We are gratified that Univision is leading the way."
