The General Motors Foundation has announced a $1 million donation to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.
The gift will help underwrite the design and installation of permanent exhibitions at the museum, which is under construction on a five-acre site adjacent to the Washington Monument and is scheduled to open in 2015. Since 1998, the Smithsonian has received more than $11 million from GM and its foundation in support of the museum.
"GM and the GM Foundation have a strong legacy of support for the African-American community and for the Smithsonian Institution's preservation of our nation's history," said GM Foundation president Vivian Pickard. "Through this grant we continue our commitment by helping to bring to life the story of African Americans who have changed our nation in so many ways."
